Gijs Heutink studies at Utrecht University and graduated in 1985. He worked as a real estate lawyer at CMS until 1991, specializing in complex real estate contracts, project  development and construction and non-contentious litigation and dispute resolution. As from 1991 Gijs worked at Ekelmans den Hollander, the Amsterdam based merging partner of Hogan Lovells, whom he joined as equity partner and head of Real Estate group until 2005. In 2005 Gijs formed, together with a couple of talented associates the real estate niche Hemwood.

Gijs is an experienced negotiator in real estate transactions and complex structures involving both government, financial institutions and companies or private stakeholders, and combines his experience in both contracting, zoning & planning with natural authority and a sharp eye for interrelations and interests. He is a seasoned litigator, both in civil and regulatory lawsuits, and combines his skills with a fine taste for dispute resolution.

Gijs publishes on a regular basis in the scientific media, and teaches at the IBR Institute for Construction law and Real Estate. He is a member of the VBR-A (association of construction lawyers) and VAR (association of administrative law). He is an honorary member of the Association of Young Lawyers (AIJA) and considered a Leading Individual in the sector by EMEA Legal500.

Gijs Heutink has registered the following principal legal practice area in the Netherlands Bar’s register of legal practice areas (rechtsgebiedenregister): Environmental law.
Based on this registration, he is required to obtain ten training credits per calendar year in this registered principal legal practice area in accordance with the standards set by the Netherlands Bar.
